Nepal Buries Unidentified Flood Victims as DNA Preserves Hope of Future Identification

Graves are being dug 1.5 metres deep, with each body numbered, documented and geo-tagged so families may one day reclaim their missing relatives.

Nepalese authorities have begun temporarily burying unidentified victims recovered after the devastating floods, as decomposing bodies and overwhelmed hospitals and storage facilities create an urgent humanitarian and public-health challenge.

The decision comes as hundreds of bodies have been recovered from rivers and downstream areas following the disaster. Chitwan district alone recovered 233 bodies, the highest number among affected districts, and authorities said many could not immediately be identified because of decomposition.

Rather than permanently consigning the victims to anonymity, authorities are putting in place an extensive identification system before burial.

Each body is being individually documented and assigned a unique identification number. Officials are recording photographs, distinguishing physical features — including tattoos, scars and injuries — as well as clothing and personal belongings recovered with the body. A legal and administrative record is also being prepared for each victim.

Most importantly, DNA samples are being collected and preserved.

In simple terms, those samples can later be compared with DNA provided by relatives searching for missing family members. A biological match could establish the identity of a victim even after burial.

By Saturday afternoon, DNA profiling of more than 100 bodies had reportedly been completed as preparations for burial continued.

The graves are being dug to a depth of around 1.5 metres — nearly five feet — in a forested area between Ramnagar and Devghat in Bharatpur Metropolitan City–1. A gap of about 40 centimetres is being maintained between individual bodies, helping ensure that a particular set of remains can be located and recovered if a future identification is made.

Bodies are being placed in numbered body bags, with corresponding identification markers at the burial sites. Authorities are also photographing and recording the burial process and maintaining GPS coordinates and mapping data showing the precise location of each body. Reports have also said concrete platforms and signboards displaying identification numbers are being planned at burial locations.

The detailed system is intended to allow authorities to reconnect DNA evidence with a specific grave in the future. Once a DNA match with a relative is established, police and forensic records could identify the exact burial location, allowing the remains to be exhumed and handed over to the family.

The need for burial reflects severe pressure on local authorities. Hospitals and morgues have struggled to accommodate the growing number of recovered bodies, while temporary cooling arrangements have also run out of space. Authorities have cited decomposition and public-health concerns as reasons why the remains cannot be stored indefinitely.

For families still searching for missing relatives, the burials present a painful dilemma. A loved one may be buried before a name can be attached to the body, but the preservation of DNA, photographs, identification numbers and precise burial records is intended to ensure that burial does not end the search.

Nepal Police have also published information on unidentified victims, including photographs and physical descriptions, to help families searching for relatives.

The operation reflects one of the most difficult responsibilities in any mass-casualty disaster: protecting public health while preserving the dignity and identity of the dead. In Nepal’s case, authorities are attempting to ensure that those buried without names today can still, through science and careful documentation, be identified and returned to their families in the future.
